Product Disposal
Chemical Disposal
How should we dispose of BTI Products’ cleaning and treatment chemicals?
Check with your local and state authorities on regulations pertaining to the use and disposal of cleaning and treatment chemicals.
Media Disposal
How should we dispose of BTI Products’ microbiological media?
As defined by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), 40 CFR, Part 261, the media contained in all types of BTI Products’ MICkit® and MIPkit™ test kits and MICtreat™ FPS Monitor Kit are not considered hazardous waste. Uninoculated media, therefore, can be disposed of according to state and local regulations. However, once the media has been inoculated and contains living bacteria, disposal becomes an issue.
There are two options available for disposing of media bottles containing bacterial cultures:
- If an autoclave is available to your company, the media should be autoclaved at appropriate temperature and pressure to kill any microorganisms. Once this is done, the bottles can be disposed of appropriately.
- If an autoclave is not available to your company, the media/test kits may be returned to BTI Products for proper disposal for a fee. Please contact us at 800.798.4650 if you would like to use this option.
Should you have further questions regarding media disposal, please contact us.

Note: Not all components of MICkit® and MIPkit™ test kits and MICtreat™ FPS Monitor Kit are media, so additional environmental laws may apply to their disposal. As stated in #2 above, you may return the entire kit to BTI Products for proper disposal for a fee.
